SMOKE DETECTION TECHNOLOGIES
There are different types of detectors available, each sense smoke or heat using a different method and responds very differently depending on the type of material that may be burning. It is important to select the correct alarm type to suit the application.

PHOTOELECTRIC ALARMS - PREFERRED
Photoelectric Alarms are recommended as the preferred detector type for most residential and commercial applications. They are more sensitive to large (often very toxic) smoke particles typically produced by slow smoldering fires. This kind of smoke is typically produced by burning foam, rubber, plastics and other synthetic materials commonly found in furniture and appliances.

IONISATION ALARMS
Ionisation alarms are more sensitive to smaller smoke particles typically produced by fast flaming fires such as those involving burning paper, straw or wood. Ionization Alarms contain a small amount of radioactive material.

HEAT ALARMS
Heat Alarms respond to heat rather than smoke. They are best suited to areas exposed to dust and fumes where a normal smoke detector would otherwise continually false alarm.

At Bocco Electrical, we are residential smoke alarm experts with over 35 years of industry experience. We have superior skills and knowledge to be able to advise you as to the best smoke alarm installation to suit your needs.

WHAT SMOKE ALARMS CAN DO
Smoke alarms can only HELP protect your family and home against loss from a fire. For maximum protection, smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom and every other area of the home to allow everyone in the home to be able to hear and respond to the alarm sound.

WHAT SMOKE ALARMS WILL NOT DO
A smoke alarm will not work without power. Building smoke alarms need mains power and a good backup battery that is installed correctly to operate. A smoke alarm will not sense a fire when smoke cannot reach the unit. If a fire starts in a chimney, wall, roof, the other side of a closed door or any other isolated area, the smoke alarm may not sense the smoke and may not give a warning. If you do not have a smoke alarm in the bedroom and sleep with the door closed, a fire inside the bedroom may not sound an alarm located in another room. Therefore, it is recommended that a smoke alarm is installed inside and outside all bedrooms. A smoke alarm will not promptly sense a fire except in the area in which the smoke alarm is installed.

A BASIC FIRE ESCAPE PLAN
To ensure your family are safe in the face of fire, it is a good idea to have a basic fire escape plan in place which should be practiced at least every 6 months. Make a floor plan indicating all doors and windows and at least two escape routes from each room. Determine a place outside your home where all of you can meet if a fire occurs.
